Ken Billinghurst Passes Away at 75: Canadian Boxing Loses Another Legendary Builder
The sad news just keeps coming for Canadian boxing. Ken Billinghurst Sr.of Calgary, Alberta, passed away Monday at 75. According to the Calgary Sun, Billinghurst opened the city's original Inner City Boxing Club and was instrumental in bringing boxing commissions to the communities of Taber and Chestermere. Billinghurst was a decorated professional boxer, winning the Ontario middleweight crown in 1955. He went on to become a full time boxing coach and was eventually inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame. In an interview with the Calgary Herald, Canadian Olympic great Willie DeWitt stated, "I remember that he was always very nice to me and he was a great guy." Unfortunately, Canadian boxing has been losing a lot of great guys lately, seeing the passing of three legends - Bob Edgett, Hank Boone and Ken Billinghurst- over a two month span.
Rest in Peace Mr. Billinghurst. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends and admirers.
Abdullah Ramadan Meets Slick Boxing Buffalo Prospect Lionell Thompson, October 22, in Mississauga
Lionell Thompson
This Saturday, October 22, Abdullah Ramadan (15-10-0) of Toronto has the unenviable task of fighting undefeated Buffalo prospect - and five time New York State Golden Gloves Champ - Lionell "Lonnie B" Thompson (9-0-0) in an eight round cruiserweight match-up in Mississauga, Ontario. Thompson is coming off a dominant performance over veteran journeyman David Whittom of Montreal (11-16-1), in which he used speed and science to pummel the brawling Whittom, taking a TKO4 victory. Ramadan, once a contender in Canada, is coming off a loss to up-and-comer Francy Ntetu (5-0-0).

Coveney “Looking Forward to Fighting Steve”: Claggett-Coveney Could Become Reality in Spring 2012
On Tuesday, October 18, Steve “the Dragon” Claggett (11-1-1) of Calgary, Alberta, issued a letter challenging provincial rival Rory Coveney (7-1-0) of Edmonton to a contest at 140lbs. “All due respect to Rory,” stated Claggett, “Its nothing personal, but this is the fight game and I want to fight him.” The Calgarian is hungry for the contest, stating neither paycheck nor location matters, as long as the fight comes off.
The Coveney Camp has already responded and sounds willing and eager to meet Claggett in the not too distant future. “A fight with Clagget would be great for the city of Edmonton,” said Rory’s manager and father Terry Coveney. “KO is holding a card in March and that would fit right into our plans. We have a prior fight booked for December.” As for the purse, Coveney is looking for a winner-takes-all agreement, his manager stating: “Professional boxing is a business and the purse should matter, so I suggest a winner take all purse and let the chips fall where they may.” Terry Coveney emphasized that “Rory has never dodged anyone” and is “looking forward to fighting Steve.”
